The Battle of the Sales: Point of Sale vs Ecommerce

Brick and mortar vs ecommerce

In the 21st century, the options for selling your product or service are endless which can make it hard to decide where to set up shop, figuratively speaking. Should you open a physical store and rely on foot traffic or should you set up shop online? The answer, as with most things in life, is…it depends. In this blog post, we’ll compare and contrast two very different types of selling: point of sale and ecommerce. By the end, you should have a better understanding of which option is best for your business.

Point of Sale systems (POS) are transactions completed in person between a customer and a seller using some type of electronic device such as a computer or tablet. POS transactions usually take place in a physical location such as a retail store, restaurant, or hotel. Some examples of POS software include Square, Shopify, and Toast POS.

Ecommerce refers to any type of business transaction that takes place online. This can include anything from purchasing a product online to booking a hotel room or ordering food delivery. Ecommerce transactions take place on websites or apps and often use some type of payment gateway such as PayPal or Stripe. Some popular examples of ecommerce platforms include Amazon, Etsy, and UberEats.

So, which type of selling is right for your business? The answer may surprise you but we think there’s room for both! If you sell physical goods, then a brick-and-mortar store with a POS system is probably your best bet but if you sell services or digital products then ecommerce is the way to go. There are pros and cons to each method but ultimately it’s up to you to decide what’s best for your business. Thanks for reading!
